No matter what sector you work in (whether it is the private, public or third sector), or what size of organisation you work in, the knowledge, skills and behaviours you need are the same.

Among the key tasks you will be expected to perform are to provide support, lead and develop a team; project management, plan and monitor workloads and resources; implementing operational plans; resolving problems and building relationships both internally and externally.

On completion, candidates can register as full members with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI); those with 3 years of management experience can apply for Chartered status through CMI.

This nationally recognised qualification supports career progression for experienced TAs across primary, secondary, and early years settings.

What does a Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant do?

Specialist teaching assistants work alongside teachers and education professionals to create inclusive, engaging learning environments. They support individual and group learners across all age groups, adapting their practice to meet specific educational and developmental needs.

As a Level 5 apprentice, you’ll tailor your learning by choosing a specialism that suits your setting and interests:

  • SEND Specialist Teaching Assistant

  • Social and Emotional Well-Being Specialist

  • Curriculum Provision Specialist

This training is fully funded through the Apprenticeship levy and specifically looks to address the shortage in funding training relating to SEN and Nurture environments.

As an Early Years Lead Practitioner, you’ll operate at an advanced, Level 5 professional standard—guiding the quality of early years provision through direct engagement with children aged birth to eight years. You’ll model high‑quality play-based learning, support colleagues in developing their own practice, and manage operational areas of your setting. You’ll collaborate with families, agencies, and other professionals, and stay actively involved in sector-wide development and professional growth.
